The\u00a0Rwandan genocide<\/b>\u00a0occurred between 7 April and 15 July 1994 during the\u00a0Rwandan Civil War<\/a>.[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0During this period of around 100 days, members of the\u00a0Tutsi<\/a>\u00a0minority ethnic group, as well as some moderate\u00a0Hutu<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Twa<\/a>, were killed by armed Hutu militias. The most widely accepted scholarly estimates are around 500,000 to 662,000 Tutsi deaths.[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

In 1990, the\u00a0Rwandan Patriotic Front<\/a>\u00a0(RPF), a rebel group composed mostly of Tutsi refugees, invaded northern Rwanda from their base in\u00a0Uganda<\/a>, initiating the Rwandan Civil War. Over the course of the next three years, neither side was able to gain a decisive advantage. In an effort to bring the war to a peaceful end, the Rwandan government led by Hutu president,\u00a0Juv\u00e9nal Habyarimana<\/a>[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0signed the\u00a0Arusha Accords<\/a>\u00a0with the RPF on 4 August 1993. The catalyst became\u00a0Habyarimana’s assassination<\/a>\u00a0on 6 April 1994, creating a power vacuum and ending peace accords. Genocidal killings began the following day when majority Hutu soldiers, police, and militia murdered key Tutsi and moderate Hutu military and political leaders.<\/p>\n

The scale and brutality of the genocide caused shock worldwide, but no country intervened to forcefully stop the killings.[5]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Most of the victims were killed in their own villages or towns, many by their neighbors and fellow villagers. Hutu gangs searched out victims hiding in churches and school buildings. The militia murdered victims with\u00a0machetes<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0rifles<\/a>.[6]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Sexual violence<\/a>\u00a0was rife, with an estimated 250,000 to 500,000 women\u00a0raped<\/a>\u00a0during the genocide.[7]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The RPF quickly resumed the civil war once the genocide started and captured all government territory, ending the genocide and forcing the government and\u00a0g\u00e9nocidaires<\/a>\u00a0into\u00a0Zaire<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The genocide had lasting and profound effects. In 1996, the RPF-led Rwandan government launched an offensive into Zaire (now the\u00a0Democratic Republic of the Congo<\/a>), home to exiled leaders of the former Rwandan government and many Hutu refugees, starting the\u00a0First Congo War<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0killing an estimated 200,000 people<\/a>. Today, Rwanda has two public holidays to mourn the genocide, and “genocide ideology<\/a>” and “divisionism” are\u00a0criminal offences<\/a>.[8]<\/a><\/sup>[9]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Although the\u00a0Constitution of Rwanda<\/a>\u00a0claims that more than 1 million people perished in the genocide, the real number killed is substantially lowe<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
