The\u00a0Armenian genocide<\/b>[a]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0was the systematic destruction of the\u00a0Armenian people and identity<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0Ottoman Empire<\/a>\u00a0during\u00a0World War\u00a0I<\/a>. Spearheaded by the ruling\u00a0Committee of Union and Progress<\/a>\u00a0(CUP), it was implemented primarily through the mass murder of around one million Armenians during\u00a0death marches<\/a>\u00a0to the\u00a0Syrian Desert<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0forced Islamization<\/a>\u00a0of Armenian women and children.<\/p>\n

Before World War I, Armenians occupied a protected, but subordinate, place in Ottoman society. Large-scale massacres of Armenians occurred\u00a0in the 1890s<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a01909<\/a>. The Ottoman Empire suffered a series of military defeats and territorial losses\u2014especially the 1912\u20131913\u00a0Balkan Wars<\/a>\u2014leading to fear among CUP leaders that the Armenians, whose homeland in the eastern provinces was viewed as the heartland of the Turkish nation, would seek independence. During their invasion of\u00a0Russian<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Persian<\/a>\u00a0territory in 1914,\u00a0Ottoman paramilitaries<\/a>\u00a0massacred local Armenians. Ottoman leaders took isolated indications of\u00a0Armenian resistance<\/a>\u00a0as evidence of a widespread rebellion, though no such rebellion existed. Mass deportation was intended to permanently forestall the possibility of Armenian autonomy or independence.<\/p>\n

On 24\u00a0April 1915, the Ottoman authorities\u00a0arrested and deported<\/a>\u00a0hundreds of Armenian intellectuals and leaders from\u00a0Constantinople<\/a>. At the orders of\u00a0Talaat Pasha<\/a>, an estimated 800,000 to 1.2\u00a0million Armenians were sent on death marches to the Syrian Desert in 1915 and 1916. Driven forward by paramilitary escorts, the deportees were deprived of food and water and subjected to robbery,\u00a0rape<\/a>, and massacres. In the Syrian Desert, the survivors were dispersed into\u00a0concentration camps<\/a>. In 1916, another wave of massacres was ordered, leaving about 200,000 deportees alive by the end of the year. Around 100,000 to 200,000 Armenian women and children were forcibly converted to Islam and integrated into Muslim households. Massacres and\u00a0ethnic cleansing<\/a>\u00a0of Armenian survivors were carried out by the\u00a0Turkish nationalist movement<\/a>\u00a0during the\u00a0Turkish War of Independence<\/a>\u00a0after World War\u00a0I.<\/p>\n

This genocide put an end to two thousand years of Armenian civilization. Together with the mass murder and expulsion of\u00a0Syriac<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Greek Orthodox<\/a>\u00a0Christians, it enabled the creation of an ethnonationalist Turkish state. The Turkish government maintains that the deportation of Armenians was a legitimate action that\u00a0cannot be described as genocide<\/a>. As of 2022, 33 countries have\u00a0recognized the events as genocide<\/a>, which is also the academic consensus.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
